Education technology, according to philosophy of
education on encyclopedia of 1996 may be placed into three categories,
Substantive technology which is at the helm of human affairs either good or ill
and work to liberate or enslave humanity, instrumentalism technology that deals
with tools and techniques as objects for animation of human purpose to give
them moral life and pluralist technology which draw more heavenly upon survey
research concerning how teachers and others have actually used education
technologies.
All these kinds of education technology related on
the position of teachers in teaching and learning process. As teaching and
learning are central to any discussion of education as technology involved.
Hence, teaching according to Hyman (1971) is an activity in which a learned
person learns his pupils. Therefore teaching is an instructional process that
involves interactions between teacher, learner and environment, while learning
refers to the process of acquiring knowledge, skill or value by studying,
experience or institution.
The current revolution in education technology aims
to demonstrate how innovative learning environment in classroom, supported
powerful new technologies can revolutionalize learning as far as many education
facilities has been innovated, such as Computers, internet, mike, scientific
calculators as well as projectors. However, with these innovations those are
designed to help teachers to their position of teaching and learning process
there are arguments that, teachers loose or gain their position in teaching and
learning process under the current revolution in education technology.
The current revolution in education technology has
led the teachers to lose their position in teaching and learning process, as in
the following discussion:-
Revolution in education technology has led to
laziness in learning to the teachers, due to the innovation of various
facilities such as Computer, teachers have been introducing topic and leave to
students to go and search themselves in the various internet, hence teacher
lose their position in teaching since they are not teaching really, instead,
they introduce topic to the students.
Source of unemployment, the current revolution in
education technology has led limited employment to the teachers, whereby there
are various education institutions that have been opened without employing
teachers, for example the Open Universities and distant learning have no longer
need teachers, since the learner use the online education, hence teacher lose
the position in teaching and learning process.
Loss of ethical standard of teaching and learning,
the current revolution in education technology has created the deterioration of
moral of teaching and learning such as wearing style which has negative impacts
to the learners, that now days the teachers who are employed especially from
universities, they tend to dress improperly, due to watch various style of
dressing in western nations, so once they apply them in academic sphere, the
learner do lose the morale of learning
and concentrate on the style and appearance of teachers, hence teachers lose
their position in teaching and learning process.
Teachers facilitate the technology rather than
teaching precisely, that due to technology, students have been sifting
information from many sources and producing project to present their knowledge
using computer and internet throughout. Hence teachers are embracing their new
roles as learning coach and manager, rather than as exclusive instructor.
Hence, lose their position in teaching and learning.
Technology revolution in education leads teachers to
lose concentration on the subject matter, this is due to the fact that,
teachers do not settle and read many books and references as possible, instead
they rely on information from the internet and computers, so teachers lose
competences in subject matter, hence there is no transmission of information
that student memorize and store for future use. Therefore teachers lose their
position in teaching and learning process.
In other hand the current revolution in education
technology has much benefit to teachers in their position of teaching and
learning process as below in the following discussion:-
Education technology helps teachers to store more
information that later are used in teaching and learning, for example Computers
have a part to store documents, so the teachers have been collecting much
information as possible and store them in a safety way that later teachers
display them to the learner during class hours and lectures that we usually see
the teacher use power point during the lectures. Hence the current revolution
in education technology has benefits to teachers in their position of teaching
and learning process.
Expansion of teachers’ knowledge on teaching and
learning process; as teachers became familiar with the use of internet and
Computers, they end up straight and expand their knowledge, for example through
the internet and computers, teachers learn different techniques of teaching and
learning from their fellow worldwide and enable to explain them to the
students, this expand teachers’ knowledge as well as student, hence education
technology has much benefit to teachers in the position of teaching and
learning process.
Education technology simplify work in teaching and
learning process, whereby the use of projectors during lectures, do simplify
work and save the time, it enables the learners to get materials simultaneously
and in right time, for the students education technology enable them to sift
information from many source and simplifying their work. It is believed that
under the computers and internet, no any hard question cannot be solved. Hence
education technology has better to the teachers in their position in teaching
and learning process.
Education technology helps teachers to interact with
their fellow teachers worldwide and get various materials to use in teaching
and learning. Through education technology and various innovation that has
discovered towards the facilities in education process such as computers,
teachers usually use them to communicate with their fellow teachers, also
enable them to search materials that later on used in teaching and learning
process. Hence current revolution in education technology makes teachers to
gain more in their position in teaching and learning process.
Concussively, education technology is more useful to
the teachers in learning and teaching process, especially in this twenty first
century, not only for the teachers but also the students who are now shifting
information from many sources and producing project to present their knowledge
using computers and internet throughout, but teachers should not embrace their
new role as learning coach and manager rather than as exclusive instructor.
